A small proportion of the early objects was revealed in “The Genious of China”, an exhibition shown in London and Paris in 1973-74, and carefully prepared articles on the archaeological and art-historical work have been published in Chinese periodicals. However, much of the important evidence still awaits publication. The author of this book had exceptional opportunities to visit provincial museums and art-historical research institutes in China in the years 1972 to 1975. He took notes and photographs of exhibits to which a precise, or reasonably close, date can be given on good evidence. This important material is published here for the first time in the West. The book is arranged in chronological order with the author’s comments beneats each object. Additional material includes a map of China showing major tomb sites and a chronological index. Published in 1896 in a limited edition of 500 copies it soon disappeared from the market as most of the ten volume, 43 x 56 cm sets were given to major institutions, heads of state, and friends of W.T. Walters, who paid for its publication and whose collection illustrated it. Because of the massive margins in the original set we needed only a very slight reduction in the text page areas, with many of the colour pages emerging in their original size. S.W. Bushell was an English doctor who spent many years as physician to the British legation in Peking. He made ceramics his avocation and absorbed and translated many of the Chinese works on this and allied subjects. It is divided into three distinct sections, each with an article and the respective catalogue entries. The first section is dedicated to the production of Chinese porcelain and the European presence in China, and shows a fine selection of Chinese porcelain pieces dating from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) to the 19th century. The second section focuses on porcelain produced by the Vista Alegre Factory in Portugal, the first porcelain factory in the Iberian Peninsula, showing a number of excellent examples of this production. The third section highlights aspects of the Meissen porcelain production. Terminating with a comprehensive bibliography, the book also includes a study on Portuguese heraldry and a glossary of Chinese symbols, both of which assist the reader in acquiring a more wide-ranging knowledge on the subject. The total number of Tobacco Leaf and Pseudo motifs in existence is unknown. This study, the only one on this subject currently in existence, looks at 38 of these motifs (10 Tobacco Leaf and Pseudo) as well as 21 variations on them (12 Tobacco Leaf and 9 Pseudo). After describing the various elements that make up the different families of motifs, the motifs themselves are then studied one by one with the aid of the 400 color photographs that illustrate the the work. To make the identification easier, the author uses a system of letters and numbers to denote the different patterns. This book, bilingual in English and French, is published by the Société des Amis du musée national de Céramique. The preface is by David Howard and the introduction by Eric Moinet, Director of the Sèvres Ceramics Museum, Cité de la céramique Sèvres & Limoges. New.
